Song & Dance of the Sioux
The Dakota Discovery Museum will be hosting traditional Lakota dancer, Michael Zieger in a demonstration of Lakota dancing on Saturday, July 31 at 2 PM at the museum.
Michael Ziegler, known also as Zuya-Ile (Flaming Warrior) is a member of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, Brule Band of the Lakota Sioux Nation. Michael performs dances he learned from his father Bill Ziegler and tribal elder, Noah Grass Rope to further the preservation of the Lakota traditions. The regalia worn by Michael is made solely from natural sources using the older crafts of quillwork, bone carving and brain tanning. Though not as colorful as more modern outfits, this regalia represents the continuous, unbroken line of tradition and man's ability to survive from nature.
"We see these performances as a living testimony to the success of oral tradition and hope for our tribe and for others that their rich cultural heritage will be preserved in the future not only by scholars but also by the enthusiasm of each successive generation," says Ziegler. "This is the only way that 'The Sacred Hoop Will Not Be Broken'."
The program will include a selection of dances such as the Horse Dance, Buffalo Dance, Shield Dance, Victory Dance and more. The program will be followed with an open question and answer session.
The program is free to the public and is sponsored in part by SearchMitchell.com, Granite Springs Lodge and First National Bank. Donations are welcome to support the museums programs, exhibits and operations.
The Dakota Discovery Museum is located at 1300 McGovern Avenue, Mitchell. The program is free to the public. For more information call 605-996-2122 or email info@dakotadiscovery.com.
